🔹 What is an EPDM Pool Solar Collector?

An EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) solar collector is a type of flexible solar heating mat or panel made from durable synthetic rubber. It is designed to absorb solar energy and transfer heat into swimming pool water circulating through it.

🔹 Working Principles

1. Water Circulation

Pool water is pumped from the swimming pool (usually using the existing pool circulation pump).
The water flows through a series of small channels/tubes embedded in the EPDM collector.

2. Solar Absorption

The black EPDM rubber surface efficiently absorbs solar radiation.
The absorbed sunlight is converted into heat, raising the temperature of the EPDM surface.

3. Heat Transfer to Water

As the pool water circulates inside the EPDM collector’s channels, it absorbs the heat from the warmed surface.
The longer the water stays in contact, the more heat it gains.

4. Return to Pool

The heated water is then returned to the swimming pool, gradually increasing the pool’s overall temperature.
This process repeats continuously until the desired water temperature is reached.

5. Temperature Control (Optional)

A controller and valve system can regulate when water flows through the collectors, usually diverting flow only when sunlight is available and the collector is hotter than the pool water.

🔹 Key Features of EPDM Solar Collectors

Durable & UV-resistant: Withstands prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Flexible & lightweight: Easy installation on roofs, pergolas, or ground racks.
High thermal stability: Operates effectively from \~20°C to 90°C.
Eco-friendly: Uses renewable solar energy to reduce heating costs.

In short: The EPDM solar collector works by circulating pool water through black EPDM rubber mats/panels that absorb sunlight and transfer heat into the water before sending it back into the pool.
